Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating an incident that occurred in Dahlonega on Aug. 14. Authorities believe that impaired driving contributed to a multi-car wreck that left several people injured. The driver deemed responsible has been arrested and charged with DUI — likely at the felony level — and reckless driving.
A local news outlet reported that the accident, which occurred at the Alicia Lane and Morrison Moore Parkway intersection, involved a total of nine vehicles. At least five people suffered serious injuries as a result of the wreck. Those with serious injuries were immediately transported to area hospitals. Those with minor to moderate injuries are also said to have sought treatment at medical facilities later in the day.
A 28-year-old male is believed responsible for this crash. Authorities believe that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the collision. The accused was taken into custody following the wreck. It is unclear if this individual remains in police custody or if he has been released.
A DUI that results in victims suffering bodily injury is generally filed at a felony level in the state of Georgia. If convicted, this individual stands to face pretty significant penalties, including imprisonment and fines — among others. At such a young age, the accused stands to lose quite a bit if prosecuting attorneys are successful in proving his guilt. As such, the accused would likely benefit from the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney as he seeks the best possible outcome for the circumstances at hand.
