White collar crimes encompass a wide variety of unlawful financially motivated activities. Those accused of these crimes are generally subjected to the search and seizure of financial records and documents by state and federal agencies. The recent raid of Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles restaurants in Georgia demonstrates the implications one may face when accused of these crimes, and it has likely resulted in her son beginning to mount a criminal defense to respond to his charges.
According to a recent article, the Georgia Department of Revenue recently executed search warrants for all of the Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles restaurants. The department also attempted to execute an arrest warrant at the home of Shanga Hankerson, who is Gladys Knight’s son and the owner of the businesses. Authorities were apparently unsuccessful in executing that arrest.
Allegedly, Hankerson is accused of stealing more than $650,000 in sales from the restaurants. Authorities also claim that he has not paid taxes on the money in question. He has been accused of using the stolen money for personal use.
While white collar crimes are not reported as often as other criminal charges in the media, the penalties for a conviction can be severe. Those facing similar charges in Georgia could benefit from contacting an attorney who is experienced in criminal defense. An attorney who focuses on this area of law will be in the best position to evaluate a client’s situation and can assist a client in navigating through the various legal channels necessary in order to bring a case to the most beneficial conclusion.
